Even though she’s the coveted “New Girl” in town, Zooey Deschanel doesn’t have much time for the fellas.

Or rather, any time at all.

The quirky actress, 32, filed for divorce from her husband of two years, musician Ben Gibbard, at the beginning of the year, and has been focusing on work ever since.

“Honestly, I’m just going through a divorce, so I don’t really think that’s something I want to get into now,” she told the May issue of Marie Claire. “I don’t have time to date. I literally — don’t-have-time.”

Deschanel, who has struck it big with critical praise for her Fox series, about a twentysomething who moves in with three single guys, also adds that children and the domestic life never really interested her anyway.

“That’s never been my focus … My sister [Emily] was always very motherly, baby-sitting and stuff,” she told the magazine. “I like kids, and I like being around kids — but it was never an ambition, something, like I need … I like working.

“That’s what I like doing. I like to work.”

And with her career on the rise, Deschanel’s hard work has clearly paid off.

The self-proclaimed “weird” gal tells Marie Claire that she has always known “there was nothing else I wanted to do … I wanted to sing, perform, act.”

And she’s laughing all the way to the bank in the face of the kids who used to bully her when she was younger.

“I still have in me the same awareness when I was 12 and chubby and a girl was spitting in my face. I’m the same person,” she said. “Certainly you change, and you change perspective, you have other experiences.

“But isn’t it funny — I can still remember when I was treated differently from the way I’m treated now.”

After more than a decade in show business, building her bona fides as an actress and musician, Zooey Deschanel is finally getting what she’s always wanted: superstardom.

Wearing a bright red coat over a simple black skirt and white blouse, her famous bangs framing those slightly more famous blue eyes, Zooey Deschanel walks — no, wafts — into the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, making Mary Poppins seem like a plodder. She slips into an outdoor booth, orders a cup of English Breakfast tea, flashes the waiter a smile that has the effect of a blow dart to the side of his neck. It’s a cold day, so he asks if she’s chilly, if she needs the heat lamp moved closer — he appears ready if necessary to build a campfire beside her Ferragamos. Even here, at the nexus of fame and beauty, where fresh celebrity is on the menu daily (Reese Witherspoon, dead ahead), the waiter is clearly starstruck, a little swoony and dazed.

Deschanel, 32, seems dazed, too, but not in a good way. This might be her least favorite part of celebrity — the interview. “I don’t do well with direct questions,” she admits. Deschanel tends to think out loud, talking in rough drafts, starting a sentence, then stopping, then starting another one, crumpling that one up, too. It’s not the insecure patter of Jess, her lovably clueless character on Fox’s New Girl, one of the smash hits of the fall TV season. Deep down, Deschanel seems to know exactly what she wants to say — it just takes her several tries. She’s that way with most things. “I’m a person who gets better with practice,” she says. “Getting older is awesome — because you get more practice.”

At the moment she’s trying, in fits and starts, to describe how the success of New Girl has changed her life. Never mind the Golden Globe nod (her first), and forget the critical praise. “It’s harder to do normal things,” she says. No longer can she run blithely into Ralph’s for a head of lettuce or some paper towels. “I think that if you haven’t been to the grocery store in a really long time, it’s really easy to get very out of touch,” she says.

Also gone is her privacy. Earlier this year, after Deschanel split with her husband of two years, Death Cab for Cutie front man Ben Gibbard, her divorce papers were splashed across the Internet, along with her financial records. Anyone remotely curious can now instantly access the minute details of Deschanel’s finances — how much she spends on clothes, food, charity.

Then there’s the weird backlash. Detractors excoriate Deschanel for playing into stereotypes of female meekness, for being too girly, too dorky, too Zooey. There are days when she seems a more polarizing figure than Tim Tebow. “People do think I’m weird,” she says. “I don’t know why.” The waves of vague hostility even inspired the plot of a recent episode of New Girl. (The girlfriend of Jess’ roommate hates Jess for no good reason.)

A greener actress might be overwhelmed, but Deschanel seems well-prepared, in full control, largely because this is the very thing for which she’s been fiercely, steadily working toward most of her life. “I always knew there was nothing else I wanted to do,” she says. “I wanted to sing, perform, act.”

No surprise, given her family. The Deschanels are full-bore dynastic Hollywood — not quite the Barrymores, but close. Her father, Caleb, is an Oscar-nominated cinematographer (Being There, The Natural); her mother, Mary Jo, is an actress (The Right Stuff, Twin Peaks); and her big sister, Emily, is the star of Fox’s long-running drama Bones. Deschanel was even named after an actor — Zooey Glass, from the classic J.D. Salinger novella.

Her parents then sealed the genetic deal by sending their younger daughter to Crossroads, an artsy K-12 school that’s spawned dozens of stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson. On campus with Deschanel were Jonah Hill and The Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg, both still friends.

Though Crossroads was unconventional and nonconformist, it was still school, and Deschanel had trouble fitting in. At 12 she was “chubby,” which made her a target of bullies. “I was ridiculed,” she says. The low point came when a mean girl spit in her face. “I really don’t know why she spit at me,” Deschanel says. “I just talked to her. I guess I wasn’t allowed to talk to her. I remember I couldn’t believe it.”
The moment was searing, scarring, but ultimately transformative. It inspired Deschanel to reimagine herself, and over the next year, she carefully, painstakingly recast her persona, becoming more open, more empathic, less “stubborn.”

She also shed 30 pounds.

“All of a sudden,” she says, “everybody treated me differently.”

There’s a tinge of pain in her voice as she describes the metamorphosis. The new girl sounds like an old soul. There’s also a touch of triumph when she mentions the popular kids who once ruled her world. “I don’t even know where they are now.”

The star of Fox’s hit comedy talks to us about her favorite episodes of season one.

Poor Zooey Deschanel was losing her voice when she met with the Television Critics Association. On a panel of Fox comedies, she represented “New Girl. The laryngitis saved her from answering personal questions, but I jumped in with some “New Girl” fanboy ones. She remembered me from because I’ve told her “(500) Days of Summer” helped me over a breakup, so she waved to me from the stage and whispered her answers into her microphone.

Crave Online: Tell us about the upcoming episode at the beach and the doctor’s office?

Zooey Deschanel: That was from the “Injured” episode. That was one of my favorite episodes.

Crave Online: What made that your favorite?

Zooey Deschanel: I didn’t say it was my favorite. I said it was one of my favorites. I love it because it had a really great mixture. It’s actually essentially a dramatic episode but there are a lot of really comedic moments and that’s what I love about doing a show is that we get to basically take on some more serious stuff but with lighthearted humor. I just really love that combination. I feel like that to me is what I like about life. Jake jumped naked in the ocean at two in the morning, guys. So a lot of hard work on that episode.

Crave Online: Is that sort of like the episode where you try to break up with Justin Long, where it wasn’t laugh out loud but I really liked how all the characters behaved in it?

Zooey Deschanel: Yeah, it differs week to week as far as how much comedy, how much drama but there’s always a mix which I like because I like characters to really have their own motivations and it’s not just about delivering one liners. All the comedy on the show comes out of the characters and their emotions.

Crave Online: The Wedding episode is a fan favorite. Why do you think that episode resonated with so many people?

Zooey Deschanel: It was a really funny episode. I love that episode. I don’t know, it’s hard to say. It definitely worked. It was nice to see all the characters really doing their thing and that episode was the first time you see them with a large group of people. Jason Winer directed that episode. I think he’s really talented. Donick Cary wrote it, great episode.

Crave Online: There was one episode where the show must have been long, so the opening credits were just freeze frames instead of the full sequence. It was like an ‘80s TV show. Was it fun to shoot those photos?

Zooey Deschanel: They didn’t actually shoot it. That was just stills [from the video.]

There’s music in the air on the Los Angeles set of Fox’s breakout comedy New Girl. Inside the trailer of star Zooey Deschanel, an electric ukulele rests on the couch. “It’s my backup from when I was touring,” she says. “Sometimes I’ll just sing at lunch for people.” She even installed a karaoke machine in the show’s hair-and-makeup trailer. Creator Liz Meriwether says with a laugh, “I have gone to makeup at four in the morning and there’s this music pumping, she’s dancing, and I’m like, ‘How do you still have enough energy?’”

The cast and crew of New Girl have plenty to sing about these days. The show’s premiere episode opened to 10 million viewers on September 20, building on lead-in Glee and benefiting from a bold Fox strategy: making the episode available on iTunes more than a week in advance. “It feels like a different world where what matters is word of mouth and getting awareness out there,” says Meriwether. “It was a risky move, and I’m really happy they did it.”

The premiere was Fox’s highest for a sitcom in 10 years, and since then, it has been this season’s No. 1 new show in adults ages 18 to 34. “I’ve been around a long time and I know to not expect too much because you don’t want to get disappointed,” says Deschanel. “We’re just so happy that people are watching it and sharing this moment with us.”

When asked about the key to the show’s success, all fingers point to leading lady Deschanel. A veteran film actress (Almost Famous, (500) Days of Summer) and accomplished musician who records with indie guitarist M. Ward under the moniker She & Him, 31-year-old Deschanel is diving headfirst into the world of TV as both star and a producer of New Girl. “I took two years off and did just music, so I really felt ready to come back to acting when I did,” says Deschanel, who’s also busy prepping a She & Him Christmas album for release on October 24. “I do take being a producer seriously and I love having that responsibility. It actually makes me want to work harder.”

That hard work is necessary to meet the sitcom’s grueling regimen, which Meriwether describes as 14-hour days, nonstop promotional tours and constant script rewrites. “I’m sure there was a question of, ‘Is she going to adapt to this rigorous schedule?’” adds Meriwether of her star. “She completely has, and not only that, she’s completely thriving in it.”

Deschanel emphasizes the importance of staying creatively satisfied in her career, even if that means carrying a greater weight on her shoulders. “I used to be frustrated on set being just an actor, feeling like I had to constantly keep my mouth shut,” she reveals. “It’s important to say what you feel in the nicest possible way and tell the best stories we can. That’s ultimately my goal.”

Deschanel’s male costars — Max Greenfield (Schmidt), Jake Johnson (Nick) and Lamorne Morris (Winston) — acknowledge and respect her dedication on and off screen. “The show is not called Three Roommates, it’s called New Girl,” notes Greenfield. “She’s so talented and because of her, we’re all here.” And Deschanel recognizes a bond forming between her and the ensemble. “I’ve always had a lot of guy friends and I like male energy,” she says. “We have a good, playful rapport, all of us.”

At first glance, it’s hard to distinguish the differences between Deschanel and her character, Jess, the slightly awkward but lovable girl next door with striking blue eyes and an affinity for bursting into song at any moment. “She’s really a 13-year-old version of myself,” says Deschanel. “There’s still that part of myself that’s totally dorky and weird. There are a lot of people who work hard to be seen as different, but I always wanted to be normal and I never really felt like I was.” And how does she feel about the oft-used term “adorkable” permeating the show’s advertisements and promotional campaign? “I think it’s great!” she exclaims. “But I don’t know if I would necessarily describe myself that way.”

Hello friends,

Andrea Warner recently had the opportunity to interview Zooey, and you can find the interview below:

Her long dark hair, framing a pair of piercing blue eyes, has inspired the hipster-chic look of countless aspiring, awkwardly cute ingenues the world over. Her starring role in (500) Days of Summer can only be described — in part, at least — as a love letter to her innate adorableness. She’s married to indie-rocker Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, and her parents named her after a J.D. Salinger character. She’s even the face of a U.S. ad campaign for cotton, for Christ’s sake. There need be no more evidence that Zooey Deschanel personifies “indie darling.”

Read the article at The Writerly Life.

Thanks for visiting! I trust everyone has been well.
