Netflix has signed an exclusive deal to stream past seasons of Fox’s Zooey Deschanel starrer New Girl.
The first season became available Monday and subsequent seasons will debut after their broadcast run, Netflix and Twentieth Century Fox Television said Monday.
“New Girl has proven to be the biggest breakout sitcom hit of the season, and we are thrilled to be able offer it so quickly to our U.S. subscribers,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “We know our members love comedies and that they’ll enjoy watching all the current and future episodes of New Girl whenever and wherever they want.”
Gina Brogi, executive vp worldwide pay television and subscription video on demand for Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution added, “As a leader in digital distribution, Netflix is an important partner for us. We are thrilled to continue building our relationship with them.”
Amid increased competition from rival streaming services like Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and HBO Go, Netflix is reportedly trying to secure exclusive deals for shows that resonate with subscribers.
It has also begun investing in and streaming original content like House of Cards, the latest season of Arrested Development and Orange Is the New Black, which was renewed last week ahead of its July 11 debut.
Fox renewed New Girl for a third season in March, two months ahead of its upfront presentation to advertisers. Fox touted New Girl as the No. 1 comedy among women 18 to 34. The show is produced by Chernin Entertainment in association with Twentieth Century Fox Television.

Fox’s New Girl is a certified hit. Advertisers pay $300,000 per 30-second spot on the show which averages 4.5 million per week. Unsurprisingly, the show (which Deschanel produces as well as stars on) was picked up for a third season which should come with a sizeable salary bump. The multi-talented actress released her third album as one half of the pop duo She & Him in May and went on a North America tour. But there’s more: Deschanel is co-founder of a promising new media site, HelloGiggles.com which draws nearly 2 million unique visitors each month, according to Google Analytics.
Catching up with a few news we haven’t posted yet… Both Zooey and New Girl were nominated for the Teen Choice Awards:
The awards show will air live on Aug. 11 on Fox. Remember to vote for Zooey at the TCA’s site: http://www.teenchoiceawards.com
Zooey and New Girl wre also nominated for the Critics’ Choice Television Awards which were broadcasted on June 10th, but sadly didn’t win. You can check the full list of winners and nominees here.
If the definition of punk is standing up against the establishment and being counter-culture, then perhaps the seersucker Tommy Hilfiger gown Zooey Deschanel wore to Monday night’s Met Ball did in fact fit the theme of the evening.
We chatted with Hilfiger about the unexpected choice and he says, “The dress was an original, quirky and fun take on the punk theme.” He tells PEOPLE the creation is a “special design for Zooey,” who — by the way — we hardly recognized when she first hit the red carpet. (Blame it on the fact that her until-now omnipresent blunt bangs were swept to the side.)
“She wanted to be really involved,” Hilfiger adds of the process behind creating the summery blue-and-white gown. “It was a lot of fun to collaborate with her on the design. We were inspired by the seersucker looks from our Spring 2013 collection.”
We never thought we’d see seersucker at an event focused around the words chaos and punk, but Hilfiger swears, “[It's] a perfect match for Zooey’s sense of style.”
And we will give Deschanel one thing: That hot-pink safety pin Edie Parker clutch is certainly a nod, albeit a cutesy one, to the night’s theme.
