Loretta Lynn, one of the top country singers of the late 1960s and early ’70s, announced on Thursday night in Nashville that Zooey Deschanel, star of the Fox show “New Girl,” will play Ms. Lynn on Broadway in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” a musical based on Ms. Lynn’s 1976 autobiography and its 1980 film adaptation that detailed her rise from an impoverished childhood in Kentucky to country music legend.

The announcement was similar to a 1979 appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, where Ms. Lynn announced that the actress Sissy Spacek would portray her in the film. Ms. Spacek went on to win an Academy Award for her performance in the movie, which also starred Tommy Lee Jones as “Doo” Lynn, the man Ms. Lynn married at 13; Beverly D’Angelo as Patsy Cline; and Levon Helm, the former Band member who died last month, as her father.

The creative team, theater and dates for the Broadway production are still to be announced. The schedule will not conflict with Ms. Deschanel’s current commitment to “New Girl,” according to a news release. While the musical will be her Broadway debut, Ms. Deschanel is no stranger to the music world. In addition to a career as a solo artist, Ms. Deschanel performs with the musician M. Ward as the band She & Him.
