1) I love getting dressed up and shopping, but I don’t follow trends. My style fluctuates: it’s whimsical and feminine. When I was little, I was a really girly girl who didn’t like to wear trousers. I just wore party dresses all the time with patent-leather shoes.

2) At school the kids wore hippy dresses from thrift stores, and people made their own clothes. I’ve always enjoyed wearing old-fashioned clothes. I try to do a bit of research before I travel so I know where to uncover vintage finds.

3) Know what suits you. Now I understand proportion and recognise the shapes that look good on my figure. I try to stick to classic pieces. I don’t go to a lot of fashion shows or pay attention to what other people are wearing.

4) The red-carpet thing of premieres and parties is probably my least favourite part of my job. I do this because I love to act. All that other stuff may be glamorous, but glamour, by definition, is all just a circus.

5) You don’t have to wear expensive clothes to look good. Growing up in Hollywood meant there were a lot of film stars’ kids at my school – but no conspicuous wealth. It wasn’t cool to show off that you had money.

MTV: You guys are here for a special reason today. We’re taking a look back at the things we’re thankful for this year, and thanks to your work individually and in “(500) Days of Summer,” you are two of the people we are most thankful for. Do you have a speech prepared?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Uh, no. Should I?
Zooey Deschanel: I knew to have a speech! No, I didn’t. I’m excited though.

MTV: This isn’t the first blush with success for either of you, but does 2009 feel like a particularly special year?
Gordon-Levitt: I think so. 2009 started at Sundance for me. “(500) Days of Summer” premiered there, and that was the first time everybody saw it. And a short film I made called “Sparks” played at Sundance, and then Barack Obama became president, which was one of the more cathartic, emotionally reinforcing, positive experiences I’ve really ever had. It feels like a special year.
Deschanel: It’s a very special year. It’s the end of the aughts, which is sad.
Gordon-Levitt: The end of the aughts! Thank you, I’ve been looking for the name of this decade, and I haven’t known what it was.

MTV: So, for you especially, Zooey, the aughts were essentially the decade when you came of age as an actress, when you essentially got started. Is it bittersweet to see your first decade as an actress come to an end?
Deschanel: It’s exciting. I have to say, Sundance 2001, Joe and I had to be there with “Manic.” I’ve been so lucky to work with Joe twice. Book-ending the aughts. And hopefully, it will be more frequent.
Gordon-Levitt: Into the teens. And the ’20s.
Deschanel: And the ’20s and the ’30s and ’40s and the ’50s. And we’ll live to a million by that point, because they’ll have all kinds of drugs to keep us alive.
Gordon-Levitt: Of course, because we’ll be cyborgs.

Several days ago Zooey finally tied the knot with fiancee Ben Gibbard, frontman of Death Cab for Cutie!

It’s official: Actress-turned-indie-rock-chanteuse Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard are married. The pair tied the knot near Seattle on Sunday, her rep confirmed to People.

Celebrity fashion collaborations are always exciting: whether Kate Moss for Topshop, Phillip Lim for UNIQLO, or Alexander McQueen for Target, it always comes as a good surprise (and an immutable plan for weekend shopping).

This season, actress-musician Zooey Deschanel collaborates with eyewear designer Oliver Peoples, making her a “designer,” too.

The Bob Dylan-meets-Pink Lady “Zooey” shades give a ‘50s tweak to the classic Ray-Ban design that everyone already has. They come in a full palette of frame colors, from transparent and hot pink to a more sober black (or at least more James Dean), and bear a metal plaque on each side, giving the vintage model a modern edge. And who better than blue-eyed Zooey to inspire, model, and sign — yes sign, the logo is in the shape of her kissing lips — the spectacles?

According to many sources, Zooey recently accepted a marriage proposal from Ben Gibbard, from the band Death Cab For Cutie, whom she dated for a year.

Ben Gibbard and actress / She & Him singer Zooey Deschanel are engaged, sources confirmed to MTV News on Monday (December 29).

The confirmation comes hours after many celebrity gossip sites had incorrectly reported that Deschanel was engaged to a different musician: AFI bassist Hunter Burgan. According to a “source close to the couple,” cited by Us Weekly, Deschanel, 28, and Gibbard, 32, are “so thrilled. … Zooey was swept off her feet, and Ben is so excited.”

In addition to her roles in films like “Elf” and “Yes Man,” Deschanel fronts the critically lauded She & Him duo with singer/songwriter M. Ward. Their debut album, Volume One, was featured on several 2008 “Best Of” lists — including ours.

Deschanel had previously dated actor/musician Jason Schwartzman and Mickey Madden from Maroon Five. Various Web sites are reporting that the couple have been dating for almost a year, and they shared the stage together — dueting on a cover of the Everly Brothers’ “Dream” — at an Obama fundraiser in August.

Deschanel’s She & Him released their debut album on indie stalwart Merge Records earlier this year. Gibbard’s Death Cab released a string of albums on tiny Barsuk Records from 1998-2004 (not to mention the ultra-successful Postal Service album Give Up on Sub Pop in ’03) until making the leap to the majors with 2005′s Plans. In May, DCFC’s Narrow Stairs debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart.
