The eyes are the windows to the soul, so it’s no surprise that many women strive for long, beautiful, curly lashes to frame this facial feature. There are many options on the market to achieve voluptuous lashes. Popular methods include mascara, false lash strips, eyelash curlers, and eyelash extensions done by a professional. As someone with naturally short and straight lashes, I’ve tried them all!
I’ve sported the drowned raccoon look, caused by mascara running down my cheeks, more times than I care to admit. False eyelash strips often look unnatural and overpowering. Extensions can be beautiful, but they require a lot of upkeep, and I hated constantly fretting about rubbing my eyes, sleeping in certain positions, and wearing eye makeup. I’ve tried eyelash curlers, but my lashes always flop back into their natural position after a few minutes.
As someone who has naturally short and straight lashes, and is also certifiably lazy, I wondered dismally about what options were left to help me achieve the lashes of my dreams.
Enter: The Lash Lift
When I was first introduced to the lash lift, it sounded almost too good to be true! This method allows you to coax your natural lashes into a beautiful, long, and curly shape by using eye-safe chemicals similar to the ones used to perm hair.
This procedure offers the best perks of other lash-lengthening methods, without the drawbacks! A lash lift can give you the drama and flair of extensions, without all the hassle of worrying about upkeep. It relies entirely on your natural lashes, so it doesn’t look fake like falsies often do. You can choose to wear mascara after getting a lash lift, but results are often so lovely that you don’t even need to worry about makeup! Finally, this method is a huge step-up from using a manual lash curler because the results last for weeks, not minutes.
How Does A Lash Lift Work?
A lash lift is performed at a salon by a licensed lash professional. Primarily, the procedure produces similar results as a mechanical lash curler, except by using special chemicals that make your lashes more pliable before bending them into shape.
Going in to get a lash lift is simple! Make sure that your lashes are clean and makeup-free; that means no mascara, eyeliner, or eye shadow. The lash professional will gently cleanse your lashes before applying a silicone shield to the skin using a gentle adhesive. Then, your lashes will be combed upward to give you the heart-fluttering, curly shape you’ve been craving!
Perming Solution Is Applied
It is where the eye-safe curling solution, similar to the perm solution, is applied to your lashes. The solution softens your lashes to make them more malleable. Many solutions contain thioglycolic acid and emacol to safely break down the fibres in your lashes so their shape can be adapted.
You get to enjoy a few minutes of stolen shut-eye while the solution works its magic. The technician will leave the curling solution on your lashes for six to twelve minutes to complete the lash lift, depending on the thickness and texture of your lashes. If the hair on your head has trouble holding a curl, let your technician know so she can adjust accordingly.
Time To Get Set
To finish up the lash lift and restrengthen your lashes, the technician will apply a setting solution. The setting solution hardens your lashes to repair the way the perming solution softened them. The setting solution ensures that your lashes stay beautifully curled! Finally, the technician will apply oil to your lashes to moisturize and condition them. And voila, you’re all set! From start to finish, the entire process takes about an hour.
The First 24 Hours
For 24 hours after a lash lift, try to avoid all forms of moisture and humidity, including steam. It’s crucial to prevent your freshly curled lashes from getting wet! Also, hold off on applying eye makeup. These precautions will give your lashes a chance to set and help the curl last longer.
After the first 24 hours, lash lift maintenance is a breeze! You’re free to wear eye makeup and don’t need to extra conscious about rubbing your eyes as you do with extensions.
Many lash professionals recommend a quickly daily moisturizing routine for your lashes. After all, they’ve been chemically processed. Moisturizing can be as simple as a dab of coconut oil or other mild, body-safe oil at bedtime. You can enjoy your hassle-free, gloriously curled natural eyelashes for six to eight weeks before you’ll need a follow-up treatment.
